Opera Unhinged began as a wild idea between two friends, Oran Tobin and Rob Partridge, who realised the world needed opera that was as bold, brash, and unapologetically fun as they were. What started as a late-night conversation in a Galway pub quickly became a mission: to bring opera, operetta, and salon culture out of the velvet-curtained halls and into the lives of everyday people.
A Match Made in Operatic Heaven
Oran, the choral and opera singer with a flair for the dramatic and a penchant for modern composition, met Rob, the ex-drag queen turned thriller and horror author, in Galway at Pride. Their friendship was cemented by a shared love of music, mischief, and the belief that opera shouldn't be reserved for the elite. Together, they are the heart and soul of Opera Unhinged, a project that's equal parts passion, chaos, and creativity.
The Operas You'll Find Here
Opera Unhinged is home to a growing collection of original operas and operettas, all written with a modern twist. These aren't your grandmother's operas, unless your grandmother likes her drama with a side of satire and her music with a splash of irreverence. So far, you'll find works that tackle everything from contemporary romance to supernatural thrillers, all designed to entertain, provoke, and maybe even make you laugh out loud.
Rob brings his love for storytelling and a flair for the dramatic (plus a killer instinct for plot twists), while Oran infuses every piece with lush melodies and modern harmonies. Together, they create operas that feel fresh, relevant, and, yes, a little bit unhinged.
Big Plans for the Future
Opera Unhinged isn't just about the music, it's about the experience. We're planning to take our shows on the road, hosting themed salons across the country where anyone can enjoy opera in a relaxed, inclusive setting. Imagine sipping a cocktail, nibbling on canapés, and watching a world-class opera unfold right in front of you, no black tie required.
Our goal is to make opera accessible, engaging, and, above all, fun. Whether you're a seasoned opera lover or a total newbie, there's a place for you here. And with big plans for new productions, collaborations, and community events, the best is yet to come.
Welcome to Opera Unhinged, where the drama is real, the music is magic, and the fun is always unhinged.
